On May 22, 2010, it was the first commercial transaction in the history of bitcoin. That day a man spent 10,000 BTC for a couple of pizzas, without imagining that today his cryptocurrencies would be worth around $ 444 million dollars.

In those years, Bitcoin took its first steps, as the exchange rate was quite low compared to today. Back then, a young American programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz posted on the Bitcointalk forum that he had decided to order a couple of family-size pizzas from the comfort of his home, and pay for them with his cryptocurrencies.

I will pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas. Maybe two big ones, so I have something left for the next day, wrote the man on the Bitcointalk forum and added: What I’m looking for is that they give me food in exchange for bitcoins so I don’t have than ordering it personally or preparing it myself, like ordering a breakfast in a hotel, they simply bring you something to eat and you’re happy.

A few days later, Hanyecz warned that he had successfully exchanged his cryptocurrencies for food, after “jercos”, a forum user, whose real name is Jeremy Sturdivant, had sent him two large “Papa John’s” pizzas, becoming not only the first pizzas bought with Bitcoin, but the first consumer good in general, that someone acquired through the cryptocurrency. To commemorate the transaction, May 22 is referred to as #BitcoinPizzaDay.

It should be mentioned that what separates bitcoin from a typical currency is its volatility. So the 10,000 bitcoin Hanyecz paid for the pizzas was about $ 41 dollars at the time, but today it equals more than $ 400 million dollars.

Does Laszlo Hanyecz regret not having kept part of his bitcoin?

The author of this feat has stated in various interviews that he does not regret what he did: You know, I do not regret it. I think it’s great that it can be a part of early Bitcoin history in that way. People know the history of pizza and everyone identifies with it, like, ‘Oh my god, you spent all that money!’ I always wanted people to start using Bitcoin and buying the pizza was one way to do it. I didn’t think it would become as popular as it has been. I have bought a lot of things over the years with Bitcoin, but I have not really used bitcoin much in face-to-face payments. I have done it mainly online, he concluded.

While he said he has no regrets about buying those pizzas, Hanyecz advises people to better use their credit card. Indeed, the story has become so famous that even every May 22nd the Bitcoin community celebrates ‘Bitcoin Pizza Day’.
